In 2007, the Massachusetts Commission on Drowsy Driving published “Asleep at the Wheel,” a report to the state Legislature on the dangers of tired driving that contained a list of action items to prevent fall asleep crashes and injuries on our roads.
Marian Berkowitz was a key contributor to this report, and its publication spurred her to create the Jim B. Safe Driving Fund (now the Drowsy Driving Prevention Project) in 2012. Now in its 15th year, the Project carries on Jim’s memory by reminding motorists of the dangers of driving while tired, and urges everyone to take precautions especially during the days around the twice-yearly clock changes in March and November. Our partners include AAA New England; The Massachusetts Department of Transportation; and the National Sleep Foundation.
We would also like to recognize the support and contributions of our legislative champion, state Sen. Patricia Jehlen of Somerville, MA, who will retire this year after decades of leadership on the issue of Drowsy Driving Prevention.
